My work began by picking up discarded branches and blossoms left from tree pruning that I came across during my daily neighborhood walks. As the seasons changed, I switched to collecting twigs when walking in parks or hiking in the woods.

In my studio, these natural materials are arranged then photographed. Often they loosely form geometrical shapes as I welcome unexpected surprises. I like to contrast the material’s fragile and temporal elements with a sense of solidity and permanence a geometric form offers. At the same time, it is just as important to negotiate how much negative space should be allowed in each image.

The Calligraphy series relies solely on chance. I pick up a few twigs and throw them on a board. The results are unpredictable yet the shapes often resemble characters. what I am left with is a series of abstract line drawings that becomes unreadable visual language.
