Views

Whether taken from film stills or photographs from my own experience, the paintings depict scenes which are photogenic- spaces which present themselves to the camera and can be manipulated to tell a story.   Rendered with multiple layers of paint, tonalities are slowly built up to create a surface that mimics the qualities of photography and the screen image.  Using photographs as a starting point, the photos are manipulated and patterns emerge, evoking a frequency or resonance in the image. By painting these scenes, I aim to draw attention to the malleability of landscape, and the trappings of visual media.  The viewer is an active participant in making meaning from these compositions; they are open to interpretation.  This body of work embraces the uncanny- they are spaces haunted by memory and tied to our experience of the supernatural.
