The work Up/Down II explores our understanding and experience of architecture and space through imagination. In a dimly lit room, two different images of imaginary staircases are projected on perpendicular walls. One set of imaginary stairs leads upstairs while the other leads down. The images are stills of miniature model staircases constructed by the artist. The work plays with our imagination of space by presenting imaginary staircases that lead to hypothetical spaces. Our understanding of space is normally informed through movement and visual imagery. We understand real-space by moving through it three- dimensionally as well as through visually assessing and mapping out dimension. In the case of these projections, the imagined space depends entirely on visual imagery and questions what our experience of space might be without actually moving through it. Surprisingly, even if we can not enter the images, we still can imagine ourselves walking up and down the stairs. Where they lead, though, is left to each person's imagination.

The light box series presented in this show explore light and shadow as physical elements that can transform space. Like the images in Up/Down II, the images used in the light box series are stills of miniature architectural spaces that the artist has constructed. The architectural models are plain, abstract, empty spaces but are transformed and manipulated through light and shadow. In experiencing the work, one can picture where these imaginary environments might exist or what real spaces they may allude to.
